Me? Never. I don’t want to come across as selfish, now.’

She falls into step beside him, bringing them a touch closer so they’re edging right on the “friends” and “couple” barriers of personal space. It’s with a sweet smile that she smoothly tugs her hand away, pocketing it in exchange for the closed distance. Close association she could do, but intimacy?— better saved for private, right? Especially holding hands.

I’m more interested in you— not that I can say you’re wrong.’

She gives the light a curious glance as they pass, turning her smile right back on him when they’re back on safe ground. It’s a real shame it’s not a busy street she chose to ambush him on.

‘So why don’t we skip that part and go straight to the fun? I know I’m not keeping you from any appointments.’ Not that she’d care either way. She brings her hand out to spread her fingers at him, in kind of an invitation. When she drops it, she keeps their hands close enough to brush.

‘You could always take me to lunch. Or me, you— I don’t really care!’

Now you think I’m alright with such a distinguished miss like yourself treating me! Let’s reconsider.’ Safe ground or not, he drags her along and propriety? Not something he’s prioritizing necessarily since this is an area he knows, well, and no one he acquaints himself on a professional level should have a good reason to be down here, at this hour. It’s a little too out of their way!

And that’s how he likes it. ’ You should also know very well as reserved as you let yourself be, a one-sided conversation is going to get us no where! Anywhere but, I mean up a dead end running up a wall.’

That’s where you’d probably like me, is his first thought but he tramples the thought along with stumbling over his own foot while they were well on their way.

Ah, it didn’t matter. This pair needed some scuffing up anyway, and if he was ever concerned about the mint condition of his anything on these strolls, short visits, more or less planned but never anticipated appointments with Izami —— well, he’d be in trouble, much less in a world of pain. ‘ I treat.’ It’s the first truly assertive thing he says through their whole encounter, and for once it doesn’t seem like a sense of duty.

Which scares him, a tad bit. As they turn the corner he slows down, bumping shoulders with her. Isn’t it a little kinder to bait your guests?

Sneak little tips under doors when they’re not looking. I dedicate my life to not staying boring, but your standards, well. — they’re hard to beat. ‘ He pulls her out into broad daylight’s view again, walking fairly close but doing away with the nearness. It’s my scant arrived reward, so if you’re feeling generous. — I am!  He pushes the glass doors to a place that looks strictly suited only for reservation, sidling up next to the counter and the under thirty second exchange he has with the man in charge of seating, gets them a booth.

Letting her seat herself first, he slides in next to but moreso across her. Space was good, …right? Space was nice, unless she was the one to initiate of course. Anything you’d like. Granted you have this kind of time.‘

She circles him once, edging her fingers over the seams of his suit jacket as she does. She tapers off when she comes to a stop at his side, dragging her hand down his sleeve. She tugs at it, casually.

‘Been keeping busy today, have we?’

‘Or are you set on being boring, like usual?’

He snags her by the wrist, keeping a loose hold on it while winding her just so, so she might look a little more purposefully wound close to him.

Would this be a problem from her side? Only one way to find out. With his free hand he reaches over to clasp gently over her knuckles and pat across the top of them, if not squeeze to be reassuring.

How’d she take that, he didn’t care to find out until he took a few steps forward and got them to crossing the sidewalk with the blinking cautionary light. Your call, I’d hope. That. Since you regularly know what I’m up to more than even I do.

You. Yourself though, that’s a topic that brings variety to the table. Care to share? at all?

VOICEMAIL: ( a rustling is heard over the phone and two clasps sound of a briefcase latching shut, they signal a certain caller on the other end packing up.   he seems to have forgotten that the rings have stopped, or why he’s calling, — or maybe, even the fact that he’s on call.

image an abrupt effort to remedy his falter is the nonsubtle clear of his throat. several sharp and unforgiving clacks accompany his rush, following one after another - that could mean only one thing, he wants to very much get out of there. has he finished up with all his work here?

that’d be a question he’d have to face up another time, )- Things have slowed down and for once I’m a little ahead on my list of need to-do’s, have you got a moment or are you wrapped up in that schedule of yours again? Seeming as I hit your voicemail.’ ( You can’t be /that/ excited to hear from me, is what he wants to say but decides against it. No, no, today — today he would be remain firm. )Tell me when you’ve got a moment, I’ve got more than enough time for you - And until the end of the day,

My offer still stands.’ ( He steps into the elevator, bowing his head to a potential senior in his office, — someone he didn’t. …genuinely recognize but it never hurt to play it safe, be polite. Never.

image For that reason, his voice takes a different turn, one almost appropriate for the supposed identity of the one he was leaving this message for ) ‘I’ll …see you later then, maybe?

Don’t work yourself too hard now,’ ( He adds without thinking and almost shrinks underneath the other man’s gaze.

He closes his eyes and smiles as if returning the fondness from the other line with a smile that his subject of attention could not see. Surely she’d pardon him for something like this. Right? Fat chance. )

image    ’ Right, I’ll try my best too, — Alright, I’ll let you go, — later, dear.’ ( He clasps the phone shut and stops in cold sweat, feeling the hairs on the back of his neck prickle up in discomfort. Overboard? Most likely.

Would he hear the end of that, - he didn’t want to think of it and the most he could do at the moment was to keep from visibly shuddering.

maybe she’d forgive him, maybe she wouldn’t. Preferably he’d rather she laugh /at/ him or only to stomp him out for such a borderline offensive gesture, but it was necessary to close it off like so in front of another member of the crew. It was better, to toss up these things up and leave them to assumption.

Much better, than letting loose strands for a loose cannon rumor like her circulating stray through the office - yes, it was. )

image ( —— better this way, and! - she must’ve gotten the memo. It was going to be /fine/, he told this to himself as he stepped out of the elevator on the first floor, being followed by the close gaze of the only witness of that phonecall. It would serve him best to get lost, and fast.

Now to work on how he’d disappear with a verifiable alibi from his workplace for the rest of the day. )

You can always do with more of it.

Now unlike the self-elevated higher up like you, there are those that still have to scrabble each day just to know that they can get by.

I’ve been doing just that. How are you
